Making Your Place: An Embodied Introduction to Permaculture

In this weekend, you will have a chance to explore what it means to live an embodied life within the context of permaculture. We will be introducing the Permaculture Principles and Ethics, and we will guide this exploration by using a combination of movement, touch, breathing and individual and partner somatic exercises. There will be discussion throughout, as well as a final ritual for the group to integrate what we’ve learned through the course.

  • do you ache for more simplicity and a more satisfying connection to your everyday life?

  • are you wanting to feel more of a part of your community and the land around you?

  • have you heard about permaculture, but don't really know what it is?

  • do you have the sense that you could be more connected to the rhythms and sensations in your body?

We seek to facilitate a more holistic vision for how humans can design lives that are more resilient, regenerative and full of co-creative possibility with others and with our Earth.

$175-$250 sliding scale

Please feel free to pay the base amount if that is what you can do. If you can comfortably offer more, please consider something between $175 and up to $250. This will go to support the ongoing development of this kind of programming.

Rio Fiore aka Jim Salerno LMT, CPD, RYT has been a practicing massage therapist, specializing in Myofascial Release Therapy since 2003 in Philadelphia. He is also a dancer, performer, yoga instructor and somatic educator, now based in Asheville, NC. These practices allow him to study the intersection of awareness, perception and the moving, breathing, feeling body in dynamic relationship with place. He has studied Permaculture Design with both Susquehanna and Surplus Permaculture (both in PA), and also completed a Social Permaculture Intensive with Starhawk and Pandora Thomas thru Quail Springs Permaculture. Rio then went on to live at Earthaven Ecovillage in western NC, where he became interested in village-scale living and human systems. Over the past 15 years, he has crafted a self-directed study combining his knowledge of contemporary and folk healing arts modalities (including his study of Southern Italian Folk Medicine, directly of his familial lineage), somatic practices, various forms of dance, improvisation, yoga asana, meditation practice, Nonviolent Communication and Radical Honesty. This has afforded him the true privilege of working closely with master teachers of various disciplines from across the US, Canada, Peru, Guatemala, Belgium, France, Germany, Japan, and the Phillippines.

Rio is currently teaching individuals and groups, as well as rehearsing for Etude 22, a contmeporary dance work inspired by the characters of the Hebew alphabet. He offers therapeutic massage and shamanic bodywork sessions designed to lead folks to a present moment-based awareness of their breath and their sensations, and to increase their capacity for pleasure, resilience and self-awareness. He's thrilled and very grateful to his teachers, students and to Leah to be able to offer this intensive!

Leah Van Winkle, M.A., CTP, E-RYT 500, makes her home in the Appalachian foothills of central Kentucky, where she grows food, teaches yoga, offers Thai Bodywork, plays, and explores! Rooted in land-based permaculture design, her passion is to expand this holistic lens to facilitate nurturing social relationships in her community. Health is Leah’s main focus, stemming from a belief that human health is interdependent on health of the land and harmony within the ecosystem we occupy. An avid student, she is always seeking more opportunities to expand her knowledge, having already trained with Starhawk and Pandora Thomas in Social Permaculture, Doug Crouch of TreeYo Permaculture, Susana Lein of Salamander Springs and Cliff Davis of Spiral Ridge. She completed her 200-hr Yoga Teacher Training at Kripalu Center in Massachusetts, her 500-hr YTT at The Om Place in Winchester, KY, has trained with Doug Keller, Tom Myers, John Friend in various yoga modalities, and has trained in Thai Bodywork under the SomaVeda Lineage, and with Michael Sitzer and Noam Tyroler among others. Her favorite things to grow are blueberries, holy basil, and mustard greens.
