Dear Middle of the Night
There is a Rumi quote I posted on Instagram: “The morning breeze has secrets to tell you. Do not go back to sleep.”. It spoke to me the first time I read it, and still inspires me. My sleep tends to follow the sun, I go to bed early and arise early. These days, I sleep quite a bit. And at times I am up for varying amounts of time, in the middle. Living in the city, I find this time super-creative and sometimes super productive. It’s quiet. No cars driving by, no people walking by, no construction noises (pretty consistent where I am). I enjoy this time. There is space for for my thoughts to come through. Often after a coaching session it will be this time when I am moved to send notes to my clients with ideas to support their journey. Or update my website. Tonight it’s raining, and I get to listen and hear the drops outside. I consider myself lucky because my schedule that, in general, allows me to enjoy this awake time without distress —meaning I typically don’t have a start time in the morning that I have concern I will be exhausted for. Nor do I have a situation in which I think I just won’t get back to sleep, which a few years ago was the case. Middle of the night (which can be any time between 11:30pm and 4am) I appreciate you.
